Richland Real Estate

Richland is located in about 11 miles northeast of Kalamazoo at the junction of M-89 and M-43.It is a quaint community of approximately 6,800 people.

This village has an Early American classical design, with a park as the central town square surrounded by businesses, a church and public library. In addition to agricultural and local small business, it contains some medium level production facilities, including office furniture manufacturing.

Richland was named after the township, which in turn was originally named for its proximity to beautiful Gull Lake, located two miles to the northeast. The shoreline of the lake is fully developed, and is ringed with homes and cottages. Its clear waters have made Gull Lake a local scuba diving hot spot. Many artifacts have been placed in the lake for divers to swim through and look at. A list of these includes a phone booth, motorcycle, car, ice shanty, swing set, railroad tracks, and two boats. The lake is accessible to divers year round; many even go diving here in the winter once the water has frozen over. The lake is sufficiently large to support a yacht club, with sailboat racing on weekends. Even keel boats such as starboat and small cruising sailboats can be raced safely. A notable sport fishery also exists in the lake for over 10 species of fish, and is also open publicly for pleasure boaters and swimmers.

Richland was first platted as Gull Corners by Willard and Sylvester Mills in 1833. In 1840, it was given a post office and re-named Richland. This town was also the intersection of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad and the Chicago, Kalamazoo & Saginaw Railroad during the lumber era in the late 1800’s.

Whether you are a potential resident, investor, or visitor of this community, you will find Richland to be rich in land, people, and opportunity.
